Fun Summer Reading Ideas for Everyone
• Research a place you are going to visit, then put some great facts in your scrap book.
• Get out some scary stories and read them around the campfire. (ex. Scooby Doo)
• Have the kids take a favorite book, make it into a play or puppet show, and act it out for you.
• Join a summer reading program; Check out our Summer Reading Incentives page.
• Ask your child casually about what they are reading. This isn’t a test, encourage informal reading.
• Read aloud; to your child and your child to you.
• Have family read time. Let them see you read for enjoyment.
• Adopt a grandparent at a local nursing home and read to them.
• Read the same book as your pen pal.
• Start a book club. http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/reading-language/reading-tips/how-to-start-a-book-club-for-kids/
• Find a funny place as your new reading spot; the bathtub, a tent, etc.
• Have a “stay up late” night where children get to stay up as late as they want, as long as they are reading.
• Or, if you need a limit, have a go-to-bed-with-a-book policy. Let your child read for ½ an hour after going to bed. (You can even get a special reading light.)
• Write notes, messages, labels, books, and journal entries.
• Read to a pet, they are good listeners.
• Read to a younger sibling or cousin, they aren’t such good listeners : ) but they will appreciate your time.
• Have a Beatnik Poetry Party, play bongos and get dramatic while reading your favorite poems.
• Read a favorite book, again.
• Have a book party where everyone gets dressed up and acts like their favorite literary character.
• Create a scavenger hunt where finding one clue leads to the next. I write whole paragraphs that are a riddle that the kids need to figure out. That riddle leads to the next, which leads to the next paragraph riddle and so on. Eventually the last riddle leads them to a prize.
• Let them choose the books, but encourage variety.
• Don’t get too caught up on reading level. If the book is too easy, it will provide success and fluency practice. If the book is too hard, you can volunteer to read it with your child.
• Hone in on their interests.
• Start a new hobby, and learn to do it by reading a book.
• Have your child read and follow a recipe. http://kidshealth.org/kid/recipes/
